“Many developing countries are being hit by the cost-of-living crisis, and they urgently need support for education. And this is exactly the role of the International Finance Facility for Education. The facility is aimed at getting financing to low and middle-income countries home to half the world's children use and to the majority of those displaced and refugee children. The facility is not a new fund, but the mechanism to increase the resources available to multilateral banks to provide low-cost Education Finance.”

“The facility is based on guarantees that have been given by the rich countries to those countries who want to invest in education for the future. The fund will particularly help those countries where there are high out of school populations and where there are many refugee and displaced children.”

On the margins of the Transforming Education Summit, taking place at UN Headquarters, Secretary-General António Guterres and Former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown today (17 Sep) met to discuss education finance and the role of the International Finance Facility for Education (IFFEd).
Talking to reporters, Guterres said, “many developing countries are being hit by the cost-of-living crisis, and they urgently need support for education. And this is exactly the role of the International Finance Facility for Education.”
The facility, he continued, “is aimed at getting financing to low and middle-income countries home to half the world's children use and to the majority of those displaced and refugee children.”
He noted that this is “not a new fund, but the mechanism to increase the resources available to multilateral banks to provide low-cost Education Finance.”
Brown, for his part said, “the facility is based on guarantees that have been given by the rich countries to those countries who want to invest in education for the future. The fund will particularly help those countries where there are high out of school populations and where there are many refugee and displaced children.”
IFFEd is specifically designed to tackle the education crisis in lower-middle-income countries (LMICs) which are home to 80 percent of the world’s children.
IFFEd is a recommendation of the Education Commission, put forward in The Learning Generation report released in September 2016. IFFEd complements existing grant instruments like the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) and Education Cannot Wait (ECW) and fills a critical gap in the international financing architecture for education.
