8. SOUNDBITE (English) Filippo Grandi, High Commissioner for Refugees, United Nations:
“Kakuma has two sites one is Kakuma camp - a fairly traditional refugee camp where UNHCR is working with many partners and very interestingly a settlement - a site nearby called Kalobeyei. This is the site of the project that we launched in 2018 founded essentially on the concept of refugee self-reliance, inclusion in national services, peaceful and mutually reinforcing coexistence with local communities with host communities, and investments that benefit both the host communities and the refugees.”

“Electricity has really helped me run my salon. And I have plans to bring more equipment for my business next year to help my business grow to the level that I want.”

13. Various shots, Joel fitting light bulb in ceiling
14. SOUNDBITE (English) Joel, Burundian Refugee:
“I started this shop because I realized that people had to travel to Kakuma to buy items like these. So, I thought opening a business selling these products will benefit Kalobeyei instead of going to Kakuma. This is why I opened this boutique selling beauty products for women.”
15. Various shots, UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi visiting Joel at his shop
16. Various shots, Grandi talking to Joel at his shop
17. SOUNDBITE (English) Filippo Grandi, High Commissioner for Refugees, United Nations:
“In 2018, the United Nations endorsed something called the Global Compact on Refugees. This is really a toolbox that the UN has offered member states to manage innovative, principled, and
solutions-oriented ways, big refugee movements. I have to say that spending one day here between Kakuma and Kalobeyei in Turkana County thanks largely to the openness of the local authorities and the cooperation of all these actors, this is the Global Compact on Refugees in action!”
18. Tilt down, Irene, host community member, switches on and off lights connected to the Kalobeyei solar-powered mini-grid
19. Wide shot, Irene listening to music with fan turned on
20. Med shot, Irene putting soft drinks in deep freezer
21. SOUNDBITE (Kiswahili) Irene Kai, Host Community Entrepreneur:
“I am grateful because since the refugees came here, we have lived together. This area was a bush, no one lived here, but now we run businesses together with the refugees. Since we got access to electricity our work has been easy. I sell drinks – water, soda. I can now blend fruits, charge my phone, listen to radio, watch TV and my whole home is lit and we have electricity 24 hours. We do business together with the refugees and live together peacefully.”
22. Med shot, woman using electric sewing machine to sew reusable sanitary towels in Kakuma town
23. Close up, hand pushing fabric through sewing machine
24. Various shots, Grandi and colleagues at KDII where refugees and host communities
produce reusable sanitary towels

Storyline

The High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi on a five-day visit to Kenya and Somalia toured projects in northern Kenya and met with Somali asylum-seekers who crossed the border to escape a catastrophic drought at home.

The High Commissioner is pushing governments, development partners, and private sector donors to help find solutions for refugees to enable them to rebuild and become self-reliant.

Grandi called on global leaders to spare no efforts in assisting countries in the Horn of Africa to overcome the worst drought in 40 years and avert famine.

The Refugee chief visited camps in Dadaab and Kakuma to meet with local and regional authorities, refugees, host community members and partners.

In Kalobeyei settlement, Grandi witnessed projects supporting development of communities there. IFC’s Kakuma-Kalobeyei Challenge Fund, an innovative private sector partnership, has benefitted both refugees and more importantly, the host community.

The initiative supports new and existing businesses and enterprises in Kakuma town, Kakuma camp and Kolobeyei settlement which hosts refugees from various countries.

A solar grid has been established with support from government donors, development partners, and private sector donors that is providing residents with clean energy.

Joel, a refugee from Burundi runs a barber shop and perfume business in Kalobeyei. He says the electricity has enabled him to serve his customers effectively.

Earlier on, Grandi visited refugee camps in Dadaab and Kakuma, meeting with local and regional authorities, refugees, host community members and partners.

More than 50,000 Somali refugees who have arrived in recent years are in dire need of support. Some 20,000 have arrived so far this year alone. UNHCR is providing basic assistance as well as supporting local Kenyans with the provision of water and other aid.

In Dadaab where Somali refugees have been living in camps for more than 30 years, Grandi saw first-hand how the drought is impacting displacement.

The High Commissioner also met for the first time with Kenyan President William Ruto where he reaffirmed UNHCR’s commitment to work closely with his new administration on protection and solutions for refugees as well as to encourage more development support to host communities.

Grandi also expressed gratitude to Kenyans for hosting and welcoming refugees.
