Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Martin Griffiths arrived today in the country for a four-day visit. Today he was in Mykolaiv, in southern Ukraine.
His first stop was at a woman-owned bakery that has remained open throughout the nine months of war.
Today, with support from the World Food Programme, it produces baked goods distributed by WFP to people in Mykolaiv and the front-line city of Kherson.
The mayor of Mykolaiv, Oleksandr Sienkevych, and the Governor of Mykolaiv region, Vitalii Kim, met Griffiths and explained how the economy of Mykolaiv has been devastated by the war, and how insecurity is still impacting their ability to repair water, electricity systems, and resume other essential services.
Griffiths visited a displacement centre where humanitarians work to keep people going and survive in a city which today hosts only half of its original population of 500,000 people.
The UN and its humanitarian partners reached over half a million people in the Mykolaiv region with aid this year, and most recently, helped the authorities by giving dozens of generators to hospitals, schools or centers for displaced people.
