GENERAL ASSEMBLY

Starting with the General Assembly today…

Member States elected five members to the Organizational Committee of the Peacebuilding Commission.

Egypt, Kenya, South Africa, St. Vincent and the Greneadines, and Qatar were elected to serve a two year term, 2023 and 2024.

Those Member States were elected to fill the seats to be vacated by Brazil, Costa Rica, Egypt, Lebanon and South Africa, whose two-year term of office expires at the end of this month.

INTERNATIONAL DAY

nbsp;

Among the other items for action today, Member States created a new day.

They declared 12 February as the International Day for the Prevention of Violent Extremism.

The new Day is an opportunity to raise awareness of the threats linked to violent extremism and to enhance international cooperation to rooting it out.

ECOSOC SEAT

Member States today also held multiple rounds of voting for the vacant ECOSOC seat.

The runoff is between Russia and North Macedonia.nbsp;

As you will recall – a 2/3 majority of those present and voting is needed.

nbsp;

BILATERALS

Turning to bilaterals, President Kőrösi today will meet with Secretary-General António Guterres.

This is part of their regular meetings.

Later today, we will meet with Ambassador Burhan Gafoor, the Permanent Representative of Singapore, to discuss the UN Water Conference in March.

QUESTIONS

The Spokesperson was asked when the Fifth Committee would finalize its work. The Spokesperson said that the trend has been for the Fifth Committee to finish its work by 25 December.

The Spokesperson was asked when the ICJ resolution could go before the General Assembly. The Spokesperson said that when the Fifth Committee finalized its work, all the outstanding resolutions are taken for action that same day.

nbsp;

The Spokesperson was asked if Egypt had been reelected to the Organizational Committee. The Spokesperson confirmed that yes, Egypt was eligible for re-election.nbsp;
