“I will reiterate the Secretary-General position which has been clear and that is that the US and the Russian Federation should resume the full implementation of the New START Treaty without delay. The New START and successive bilateral treaties on strategic nuclear arms reduction between the two countries have provided security not only for Russia and the United States, but for the entire international community.”

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesperson for the Secretary-General, United Nations:
“This should not need to be said but it needs to be said: a world without nuclear arms control is a far more dangerous and unstable one, with potentially catastrophic consequences. Every effort should be taken to avoid this outcome, including through an immediate return to dialogue.”

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesperson for the Secretary-General, United Nations:
“I can't speculate on what countries may do. What we do know is that it is vital to have continued high-level engagement between the two world's most powerful nuclear powers. And that is why we call for a resumption of the full implementation by all parties of the New START Treaty.”

Storyline

The UN Secretary-General said on Tuesday that “the US and the Russian Federation should resume the full implementation of the New START Treaty without delay”, according to a UN Spokesperson.

Asked about President Vladimir Putin's announcement that Russia would suspend its participation in the last remaining major nuclear-arms-control treaty with the United States, Stephane Dujarric said the UN chief also notes that “the New START and successive bilateral treaties on strategic nuclear arms reduction between the two countries have provided security not only for Russia and the United States, but for the entire international community.”

According to the Spokesperson, “this should not need to be said but it needs to be said: a world without nuclear arms control is a far more dangerous and unstable one, with potentially catastrophic consequences.”

Dujarric added, “Every effort should be taken to avoid this outcome, including through an immediate return to dialogue.”

Answering another question, the Spokesperson said he “can't speculate on what countries may do”, but “it is vital to have continued high-level engagement between the two world's most powerful nuclear powers.”

He continued, “And that is why we call for a resumption of the full implementation by all parties of the New START Treaty.”
