Storyline

World Health Organization (WHO) Chief, Tedros Ghebreyesus today (28 Feb) visited health facilities in areas in Southeast Türkiye affected by the earthquakes.

At a press encounter in Hatay, Tedros said, “from WHO’s side, we will support in any way possible based on the issues observed or documented and based on the priorities of the Ministry.”

He said, “this earthquake is massive, and the impact is really massive. Of course, Türkiye is doing its best and we can see that on the ground, but it also needs support.”

On 6 February 2023, a series of large earthquakes hit southern Türkiye and northern Syria, followed by hundreds of aftershocks. Thousands of lives were lost in the initial earthquakes and thousands more are at risk given the destruction of infrastructure and freezing temperatures in the affected areas.

Also talking part of the delegation, WHO’s Regional Director at the Regional Office for Europe Dr Hans Henri P. Kluge said, “it’s amazing, the collaboration between the Belgian Emergency Medical Teams and the Turkish counterparts. This is what WHO is coordinating, the largest deployment of emergency medical teams in its 75th year anniversary.”

Urgent needs include providing medical care for people with physical injuries and ensuring food, drinking water and shelter for all those who have lost their homes. Ensuring continuous access to basic health services is also critical.
