3. SOUNDBITE (English) Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesperson for the Secretary-General, United Nations:
“We very much join our colleagues in the UN Refugee Agency being alarmed by the massive displacements of people, following violent clashes between non-state armed groups and government forces. In February alone, nearly 300,000 people fled across Rutshuru and Masisi territories in the North Kivu Province. More than 5,500 people have also crossed the border into neighbouring Rwanda since January, and another 5,300 men, women and children into Uganda, this as insecurity and violence continue to impact the border regions almost on a daily basis.”

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesperson for the Secretary-General, United Nations:
“In the past year, over 800,000 people have been displaced, including towards the provinces of South Kivu and Ituri. UNHCR and its partners are urgently scaling up humanitarian and protection assistance to tackle the urgent needs. While efforts are made to provide protection and assistance to those displaced close to Goma, UNHCR says today they are deeply concerned about restricted humanitarian access to displaced populations in other parts of North Kivu, as the major routes to impacted areas have frequently been inaccessible.”

The UN and the Refugee Agency (UNHCR) are alarmed by the massive displacements of people in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, following violent clashes between non-state armed groups and government forces, said a UN spokesperson.
Briefing journalists on Friday (10 Mar) in New York, Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said that, in February alone, nearly 300,000 people fled across Rutshuru and Masisi territories in the North Kivu Province.
More than 5,500 people have also crossed the border into neighbouring Rwanda since January, and another 5,300 men, women and children into Uganda.
In the past year, over 800,000 people have been displaced, including towards the provinces of South Kivu and Ituri.
According to Dujarric, this happens “as insecurity and violence continue to impact the border regions almost on a daily basis.”
The spokesperson said that “UNHCR and its partners are urgently scaling up humanitarian and protection assistance to tackle the urgent needs.”
According to him, while efforts are made to provide protection and assistance to those displaced close to Goma, “UNHCR says today they are deeply concerned about restricted humanitarian access to displaced populations in other parts of North Kivu, as the major routes to impacted areas have frequently been inaccessible.”
This year, UNHCR is asking for $232.6 million to assist internally displaced people and refugees in the DRC. As of today, the appeal is only 8 percent funded.
