Answering questions today (30 Mar) about freedom of expression and recent reporters’ detentions in Russia and Bangladesh, Dujarric said that the Secretary-General has repeatedly and continues to express his concern and very deep concern at the continued harassment we are seeing of journalists the world over.”

He also said, “A free press is the backbone of the world we should be, we would like to aspire to all live in.”

According to news reports, Shamsuzzaman Shams, a correspondent for Prothom Alo, was detained in the early hours of Wednesday at his home in Bangladesh; the US journalist Evan Gershkovich, has been arrested in Russia and accused of spying while working for the Wall Street Journal.
