Marking the International Mother Earth Day, the President of the General Assembly said, “As humans, we are latecomers, new tenants of this world. Tenants with short term leases but with particular responsibilities.”
The President of the General Assembly Csaba Kőrösi convened an Interactive Dialogue during the commemoration of the International Mother Day today (24 Apr) in New York.
He said, “Our mainstream attitude has centered on extracting nature’s resources for the fulfillment of the immediate needs of just one or two generations of humans. Our approach has been based on believing that resources are infinite and growth of consumption is always good.”
Kőrösi added, “The assumption that there is limitless potential for traditional economic growth encourages unsustainable production and consumption patterns beyond the Earth’s regenerative capacity.”
Making her remarks at the event, Teresa Ribera, Deputy Prime Minister of Spain, stressed the importance of restoration. She said, “protection of our marine ocean ecosystems, decreasing the risks that prey upon them, such as the appearance of plastics of microplastics and larger plastics or the presence of pollution events or activities on the seabed, which have not been sufficiently researched and thus endanger the implementation."
