“I'm here in Port Sudan. I came here today to demonstrate by this visit the solidarity that the United Nations holds very dearly for the people of Sudan, especially in these extraordinarily difficult times. My responsibility is as regards the humanitarian operation. And so today I've had meetings and discussions with the heads of humanitarian agencies in the UN system, with international NGOs. And perhaps more importantly, and most importantly, with the representatives of Sudanese, NGOs and Sudanese civil society.”

“And the reason I wanted to meet them was to understand from them what do they need from others to allow them to do the job they do best, which is providing support and assistance for the protection of the Sudanese people. And there are two things they all said to me is, are necessary.”

“Number one, clear, definitive agreements, commitments in writing in public of the parties, to protect the movement of humanitarian supplies, humanitarian workers, to stop the looting that happens of humanitarian stocks so that aid agencies can do the job they only know best. And number two, the generosity of the international community of governments around the world to pay for the needs of the Sudanese people who have such a suffering and such difficulties at this time.”

“We need to see international generosity and we need to see national solidarity. I'm convinced from my time here today both these two things are possible. And if they are, then maybe we will see the people of Sudan getting what they deserve and what they're entitled to, which is the support of the world in this time of difficulty.”

Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Martin Griffiths today (3 May) called for “clear, definitive agreements, commitments in writing”, to protect the movement of humanitarian supplies, and humanitarian workers, as well as “to stop the looting that happens of humanitarian stocks so that aid agencies can do the job they only know best.”
The UN World Food Programme (WFP) has reported that six trucks heading to Darfur had been looted.
At the request of SG Guterres, Griffiths traveled to Sudan to reaffirm the UN's commitment to the Sudanese people, meet with members of the humanitarian community, and seek commitment from the parties to protect humanitarian assets.
In Port Sudan, the humanitarian official held meetings and discussions with the heads of humanitarian agencies in the UN system, international NGOs and representatives of Sudanese NGOs and civil society.
He said, “the reason I wanted to meet them was to understand from them what do they need from others to allow them to do the job they do best, which is providing support and assistance for the protection of the Sudanese people. And there are two things they all said to me is, are necessary.”
He also called for “the generosity of the international community of governments around the world to pay for the needs of the Sudanese people who have such a suffering and such difficulties at this time.”
Since violence erupted on 15 April, more than 334,000 people are believed to be internally displaced and more 100,000 people have fled to neighbouring countries, according to UN aid coordination office, OCHA.
