Storyline

General Assembly President Csaba Kőrösi today (11 May) said it was time “to get serious about debt relief in Middle-income countries, which host the majority of the extreme poor in the world,’ and called for the international community “to go beyond GDP as the primary measure of development.”

Addressing a High-level Meeting on Middle-Income Countries (MICs), Kőrösi said, “we need a measurement that captures the cost of human social, natural and built capital at the same time, namely, the total assets of a nation since it's balanced growing is the essence of Sustainable Development.”

The GA President said MICs “need equitable access to new technologies, science and innovation that spur resilience in the long run,” noting that this “is a shared charge and international partnership is key.”

In her address to the meeting, the President of the Economic and Social Council, Lachezara Stoeva, said, “sustainable development is a shared responsibility. The SDGs cannot be achieved without addressing the needs and specific challenges of Middle-income countries as these countries are key actors in the implementation of the 2030 agenda. We must work together to create an enabling environment for sustainable development and to ensure that no one is left behind.”

For her part, the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) Youth Representative, Rosemond Yeboah, said, “75 percent of the world's population resides and Middle-income countries, whit 62 percent of the population, constituting the world's poor. middle income countries account for approximately one third of the world's economy and are significant drivers of global growth.”

The High-level Meeting is being held under the theme “Accelerating the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals in middle-income countries, with a focus on the environmental dimension” and organized to take stock of the gaps and challenges of middle-income countries in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda, and promote implementation of the SDGs through practical, evidence- and science-based solutions.

MICs are a large and heterogenous group that exhibits a broad range of development achievements and challenges. For MICs, the World Bank income classification ranges from the per capita income of about $1,000 to more than $12,000 per year, with 107countries currently ranked as middle-income. Included in the group of MICS are twenty least developed countries, nineteen landlocked developing countries and twenty-nine small island developing states.

The group also contains fifty-seven countries with a “very high” or “high” human development index. Together, MICs account for around three quarters of the world population and are home to over 60 percent of world’s poor. They represent about one third of world GDP and are major engines of global growth.
