2. SOUNDBITE (English) António Guterres, Secretary- General, United Nations:
“In relation to the situation in Sudan, there are areas of responsibility of the Security Council and there are areas of responsibility of the Secretary-General. In my area of responsibility, I reaffirmed to the Council my full confidence in Volker Perthes as Special Representative of the Secretary-General. It is up to the Security Council to decide whether the Security Council supports the continuation of the Mission for another period or whether the Security Council decides that it is time to end it. Thank you very much.”
3. SOUNDBITE (English) Vasily Nebenzya, Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Russian Federation:
“I mean, perhaps we have first to stabilize and then to think about how we can change the mandate or whatever and how the UN presence in the country can be effective, but we're not there. Look, we support UNITAMS. That I cannot tell you. Too early to say. That I cannot tell you. We are in the process of technical renewal of the Mission now and then then we'll see later.”
4. SOUNDBITE (English) Pascale Baeriswyl, Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Switzerland:
“Yeah, you know, the Secretary-General briefed the Council members in consultations about his efforts around the Mission and the situation and we had a very constructive exchange, also about the future of the Mission. As you know, this mandate is up for renewal. So, I think it was very important that we could had a frank exchange, including with the Secretary-General. That is what I wanted to tell you. And I think that as much as I can say, because I cannot speak on in my capacity as a Security Council President, but you will, of course see in the coming days our efforts as a Council to come up with a mandate renewal or whatever the consensus will all be all about. So, that's what I wanted to say. And I thank you very much.”
After Security Council consultations on the renewal of the mandate of the United Nations Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS), Secretary-General António Guterres today (31 May) expressed “full confidence in Volker Perthes as Special Representative of the Secretary-General,” and said it was “up to the Security Council” whether it “supports the continuation of the Mission for another period or whether the Security Council decides that it is time to end it.”
