Storyline

Jean-Pierre Lacroix, the under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, wrapped up his trip to the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Earlier on Wednesday (7 June), he spoke to media in Kinshasa and noted that the peacekeeping mission in the country (MONUSCO) is in its transition phase, adding that discussions are ongoing with Government and key actors to ensure a responsible and phased exit.

While in Kinshasa, Lacroix met with President Felix Tshisekedi; the Prime Minister, Sama Lukonde, and members of his Government; as well as the President of the Senate, Mr. Ngolo Pierre.

According to a UN Spokesperson, discussions included the reconfiguration of the peacekeeping mission, which as you will recall, is in response to the Government’s desire to revise the transition plan to speed up MONUSCO’s withdrawal.

Lacroix also held meetings with civil society organisations, including women, and political actors from both the majority and the opposition, during which they discussed the electoral process and security issues in the East of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
He appealed for calm, so that the forthcoming elections are credible, peaceful, transparent, and held within the constitutional timeframe.

Lacroix also visited the Drodro refugee camp, in the province of Ituri, and interacted with the local population. Drodro, a refugee camp in Djugu territory, in the Ituri province. Around 230,000 people live in more than 60 displacement sites across the Ituri province, managed by the IOM and UNHCR.
