The Peacekeeping Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) condemned the attack that took place last night at the Lala site for displaced people, a UN spokesperson said.

Briefing journalists on Monday (12 June) in New York, Spokesperson for the Secretary-General, Stéphane Dujarric, said that “initial reports that we are receiving indicate that more than 45 people were killed and 10 more were injured.”

According to the Spokesperson, the site is about 75 kilometres from Bunia, in the Ituri Province, in the eastern part of the country.

The peacekeeping mission said that, according to its information, members of the CODECO armed group are responsible for this targeted attack against vulnerable displaced people.

Dujarric also said that “peacekeepers have stepped up security in the area, in collaboration with the provincial authorities” and “the Mission extends its condolences to the families of the victims and wishes a speedy recovery to all those who were injured.”

In a statement, the Mission added that they “will spare no effort to put an end to these attacks and to combat impunity, within the framework of its mandate.”
