2. SOUNDBITE (French) Alain Berset, President of Switzerland:
“Well, in a world of repeated crises, which are reinforcing each other, feeding each other even feeding off each other more and more, the only solution, I think, is to greatly improve coordination at the multilateral level. And I think the ILO has a key role to play to play in terms of coordination with the health, sector, trade sector and finance sector, the World Bank and others, and we're expecting a lot.”
[French]

4. SOUNDBITE (French) Alain Berset, President of Switzerland:
“One of the demands of the women on strike today refers explicitly to ILO Convention No. 190 on sexual violence in the workplace. So, I say now, I believe that today's strike illustrates, in an extremely concrete way, how indignation in the face of unjust situations can be transformed into political action. But that requires optimism. You need a deep conviction that we can change things, whether within our own society or locally, or internationally and globally.”
[French]

6. SOUNDBITE (French) Alain Berset, President of Switzerland:
“There is no social justice without respect for human rights, without social protection, without guarantee of fundamental freedoms.”
[French]
“Il n’y a pas de justice sociale sans respect des droits humains, sans protection sociale, sans garantie des libertés fondamentales. »

8. SOUNDBITE (French) Alain Berset, President of Switzerland:
“At a time of the inadmissible Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, multilateral platforms are more important than ever. And we are here together in Geneva, physically reunited here together in Geneva, in Switzerland, which is committed with determination to address the current challenges in the framework of international cooperation which is as close as possible. And inequalities in the world are, probably with global warming, one of the greatest scourges of our time.”

10. SOUNDBITE (French) Alain Berset, President of Switzerland:
“In this context of uncertainty, it is all the more important to continue our commitment to social progress, multilateralism and sound politics.”
[French]
« Dans ce contexte d’incertitudes, il est d’autant plus important de poursuivre notre engagement pour le progrès social, le multilatéralisme et une politique rationnelle. »
11. Wide shot, conference room
12. SOUNDBITE (English) Gilbert F. Houngbo, ILO Director-General:
“We must not underestimate the importance of a redynamised multilateralism, which is essential if we are to effectively tackle the interconnected crises of our times and rebuild trust in governance, rebuilding trust in the UN system. If we are to create a renewed social contract, it will need to be driven by solidarity, it will need to be driven by fairness and – above all – to be driven by social justice.”

Storyline

Alain Berset, the President of Switzerland addressed delegates from the International Labour Organization’s 187 Member States at the ILO’s World of Work Summit.

Alain Berset is the first of 17 Heads of State and Government to speak at the summit in Geneva today (14 Jun). The summit is taking place from 14 to 15 June, under the theme of “Social Justice for All”.

The summit will discuss and inform the proposal to forge a Global Coalition for Social Justice - a multi-lateral initiative that, said the ILO Director-General, Gilbert F. Houngbo, will “create a renewed social contract, driven by solidarity, fairness.”

President Berset said, “in a world of repeated crises, which are reinforcing each other, feeding each other even feeding off each other more and more, the only solution, I think, is to greatly improve coordination at the multilateral level. And I think the ILO has a key role to play to play in terms of coordination with the health, sector, trade sector and finance sector, the World Bank and others, and we're expecting a lot.”

In his speech, the Swiss President said, “One of the demands of the women on strike today refers explicitly to ILO Convention No. 190 on sexual violence in the workplace.”

President Berset continued, “I believe that today's strike illustrates, in an extremely concrete way, how indignation in the face of unjust situations can be transformed into political action. But that requires optimism. You need a deep conviction that we can change things, whether within our own society or locally, or internationally and globally.”

He also reiterated, “There is no social justice without respect for human rights, without social protection, without guarantee of fundamental freedoms.”

On the war in Ukraine, the Swiss President said, “At a time of the inadmissible Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, multilateral platforms are more important than ever. And we are here together in Geneva, physically reunited here together in Geneva, in Switzerland, which is committed with determination to address the current challenges in the framework of international cooperation which is as close as possible. And inequalities in the world are, probably with global warming, one of the greatest scourges of our time.”

President Berset also said, “In this context of uncertainty, it is all the more important to continue our commitment to social progress, multilateralism and sound politics.”

Gilbert F. Houngbo, ILO Director-General also spoke at the summit. He said, “We must not underestimate the importance of a redynamised multilateralism, which is essential if we are to effectively tackle the interconnected crises of our times and rebuild trust in governance, rebuilding trust in the UN system. If we are to create a renewed social contract, it will need to be driven by solidarity, it will need to be driven by fairness and – above all – to be driven by social justice.”

Other participants will include high-level representatives from the United Nations, other international organizations, and employers’ and workers’ organizations. There will also be an address from the UN’s Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres.

Participants will discuss policies and actions that can advance social justice and highlight the key role of social justice in creating a more sustainable and equitable world.

The World of Work Summit is taking place during the 111th International Labour Conference at the Palais des Nations.
