“Hate speech is an attack on human dignity and one of the most toxic forms of misinformation. We must address it because we know that hate speech leads to hate crimes. It is not an exaggeration to say that countering hate speech is a key component of atrocity prevention.”

“Hate speech is used to stoke fear and division, often for political gain, and at immense cost to communities and societies. It incites violence, exacerbates tensions, and impedes efforts to foster mediation and dialogue. It is one of the warning signs of genocide and other atrocity crimes.”

“Today we are focusing on the good examples in tackling hate speech holistically. There are many. And should be commended. However, we know that we are still often not responding as rapidly as hate is spreading.”

Addressing today (19 June) a high-level event to mark the 2nd International Day for Countering Hate Speech, General Assembly President Csaba Kőrösi said, “Marking this International Day encourages us all to do our part – by identifying hate speech early, confronting it directly, and halting it immediately.”
Csaba Kőrösi also added, “How can we, the international community, step up our response? This is a question of responsibilities.”

Alice Wairimu Nderitu, Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide, delivered address of the Secretary-General António Guterres, she said, “Hate speech is used to stoke fear and division, often for political gain, and at immense cost to communities and societies. It incites violence, exacerbates tensions, and impedes efforts to foster mediation and dialogue. It is one of the warning signs of genocide and other atrocity crimes.”
Speaking on her personal capacity, Alice Wairimu Nderitu added, “Today we are focusing on the good examples in tackling hate speech holistically.”
She stressed, “However, we know that we are still often not responding as rapidly as hate is spreading.”
Omar Hilale, Permanent Representative of Morocco to the United Nations, said that this international day is “a real call to action.”
The high-level event was organized by the Permanent Mission of the Kingdom of Morocco to the United Nations and the United Nations Office on Genocide Prevention and the Responsibility to Protect.
