Bintou Keita, who is the Special Representative of the Secretary-General in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Head of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO), from 24 to 28 July travelled to Bunia in the province of Ituri in eastern DRC to meet representatives of different communities and to discuss challenges ahead for MONUSCO’s transition.
The Chief of MONUSCO visited the site of the displaced people of Lala, about a hundred km north of Bunia in the territory of Djugu.
On June 12, 2023, an attack on the site by CODECO militiamen cost the lives of 46 displaced persons, including 23 children. 44 of the victims were buried in a mass grave at the entrance to the site.
Keita went there to sympathize with the families of the victims and to express the solidarity of the United Nations to all of the nearly 9,000 displaced persons.
On the spot in Lala, the MONUSCO Chief bowed before the mass grave of the victims and met with the women and other local civil society representatives.
