Storyline

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk on Monday (07 Aug) visited Erbil, in the first-ever official mission by a UN human rights chief to the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.

During his visit, Türk met with Kurdistan Regional Government President Nechirvan Barzani and Prime Minister Masrour Barzani and other senior officials. The High Commissioner also held meetings with civil society representatives and human rights defenders working on issues such as justice and accountability, violence against women, freedom of expression and climate change, among others.

Türk will visit Basra in southeastern Iraq tomorrow, and will hold a press conference in Baghdad on Wednesday, 9 August.

At the end of his mission, on 9 August, the High Commissioner is scheduled to hold a news conference in Baghdad at approximately 17:00 local time.
