“He recognized that the United Nations may be imperfect – but he knew it was indispensable. And he summoned us all to reach higher. The UN chief said, "We have the shared responsibility to pursue the truth" on the plane crash in which former UN Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld died.
Commemorating the 62nd anniversary of the death of Hammarskjöld today (13 Sep), Guterres welcomed the General Assembly’s resolution in December 2022 to continue the investigation into the cause of the plane crash and echoed the General Assembly’s call for Member States to release any relevant records in their possession.
According to Guterres, Hammarskjöld shaped the United Nations in innumerable ways –setting new standards of public service and launching the organization on its active career as the custodian of world peace.
He continued by saying that the former Secretary General recognized that the United Nations “may be imperfect – but he knew it was indispensable. And he summoned us all to reach higher.”
He quoted Hammarskjöld’s words, “It is when we all play safe that we create a world of utmost insecurity.”
Guterres continued, “Let us take inspiration from the courage of his convictions and the power of his example.”
He concluded by asking all the participants to join him in a moment of silence at the ceremony.
Dag Hjalmar Agne Carl Hammarskjöld was Secretary-General of the United Nations from 10 April 1953 until 18 September 1961, when he died in a plane crash while on a peace mission in the Congo.
He was born on 29 July 1905 in Jonkoping in south-central Sweden.
During his terms as Secretary-General, Hammarskjöld carried out many responsibilities for the United Nations in its efforts to prevent war and serve the other aims of the Charter.
