Marking the International Day of Older Persons, UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk said, “75 years ago, when the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted, one in 20 people in the world, for around 128 million people, were aged 65 years or older, by 2050 it is projected that those over 65 will number 1.6 billion people,” adding “one in six people on this planet will be an older person.”

In a recorded video message at the event titled ‘Fulfilling the Promises of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights for Older Persons: Across Generations’ , Volker Türk said, “This fact that we are living a longer life is immense course for celebration older persons and their leadership, knowledge and experience are essential to inclusive and sustainable societies and decision-making and governance that is informed by the past, while looking to the future.”

For his part, William Smith, UN Representative at Global Ageing Network, said, “I am an older person, along with 300 other registrants, many of whom are here, who are older persons and advocates, working on behalf our convention on the rights of older persons globally. The United Nations International Day of Older Persons 2023 is a call to action and opportunity, with globally representative experts offering a multi-stakeholder dialogue on a range of human rights of older persons and as well as on examples of policies that facilitate intergenerational solutions, taking into account a life course approach to equality, freedom and justice for all.
