The Secretary-General “strongly condemns” today’s attack which reportedly killed at least 49 people and injured several others in the Kupiansk district of Kharkiv region of Ukraine, a UN spokesperson said.

Briefing journalists today (05 Oct) in New York, UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said, “attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure are prohibited under international humanitarian law and they must stop immediately.”

He also said that the Secretary-General “extends his deepest condolences to the families of the victims and wishes a prompt recovery to those injured.”

The Humanitarian Coordinator in Ukraine, Denise Brown, also issued a statement condemning the attack, Dujarric said.

The Spokesperson said that Brown called the images arriving from the site of the attack “absolutely horrifying”.

Dujarric concluded, “our colleagues tell us that humanitarian workers in the country are mobilizing assistance to civilians harmed in the attack.”
