"All those that will be in COP 28 should come here and see these glaciers receding. They are melting very quickly causing floods, landslides, and dramatic impacts on the communities. But if climate change goes on like that one day there will be no more ice, no more water feeding the rivers; the Indus, the Ganges, the Brahmaputra. And the deltas will be invaded by salt water coming from the rising sea levels, displacing millions of people. It's time to take drastic measures to fight climate change."

Secretary-General António Guterres on Tuesday (31 Oct) wound up his trip to Nepal after visiting the Annapurna Base Camp, where he raised the alarm about receding glaciers ahead of COP 28.

The Secretary-General said glaciers “are melting very quickly, causing floods, landslides and dramatic impacts on communities” and stressed it was “time to take drastic measures to fight climate change.”

The average thickness of the world’s glaciers has plummeted by almost 30 metres since 1970, and irreversible changes in the global cryosphere will affect well over a billion people who rely on water from snow and glacier melt, according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).
