13. SOUNDBITE (English) Joel Asimwe, voter from Beni:
“As you know, in Beni, the last elections, we did not vote because of the reasons you know. For me, this election was like, I have to go and to vote. I did my best and says it as my wife when we woke up at 4 a.m. and get ready to come here, sight, so that we are, you know, among the first people who can vote. And I'm very happy because for me the process was easy because I saw the video in the WhatsApp and, you know, I learned from that. But it was not easy for elderly people and especially for those who did not have access to WhatsApp to see to have those instructions. And the other problem here exactly here we started very late. I don't know why, and that's another problem because we started late and no one told us why we started late and there was a confusion on where each one should go. So sometimes they tell you you need to be here the other day that they know you go the other side. So it required a lot of patience. But, generally speaking, I'm very happy and I count my vote.”

Storyline

The 20th December is, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), an election day. In the North-Kivu province and in Beni town, early in the morning, many people have joined the polling station to express their vote.

The vote started a little bit late in some polling stations. But up to this afternoon, no serious incident was reported in any of the various polling stations.

Unlike other places across the country, today Beni people have expressed their vote in a peaceful way.

As a reminder, for the previous poll in 2018, the presidential election did not take place in Beni, due to Ebola disease in the area.
