“We met internally displaced people, we interacted with groups, Refugee populations and host populations in Boudouri in the Chetimari commune of Diffa region. Many are living in extremely difficult conditions, most of them, of course, women and children who have been displaced due to violence for more than five years. I was deeply moved by their resilience. I was deeply moved by the hope that the people emitted. I was deeply moved by their commitment to overcome the challenges that they face.”

“We need to do more now. We need to do more urgently. We need to work together again, putting people at the centre of what we do. If we don't help people now, we will miss planting seasons. If we don't help people now, we will not be able to support them and lift them out of their vulnerability.”

Noting that 4.3 million people in Niger require some form of assistance or protection, a United Nations humanitarian official in Niger today (18 Jan) stressed the need “to provide effective humanitarian assistance” and to “promote solutions that can help people move out of crisis.”
Speaking via video teleconference from Niamey, Edem Wosornu, who is the Director of the Operations and Advocacy Division at the UN Humanitarian Agency (OCHA) told reporters in New York she had met with refugee and host populations in Boudouri in the Chetimari commune of Diffa region.
Wosornu said, “many are living in extremely difficult conditions, most of them, of course, women and children who have been displaced due to violence for more than five years. I was deeply moved by their resilience. I was deeply moved by the hope that the people emitted. I was deeply moved by their commitment to overcome the challenges that they face.”

662 million US dollars, she noted, are needed “to assist 3 million people plus across the country.”

If we don't help people now, we will miss planting seasons. If we don't help people now, we will not be able to support them and lift them out of their vulnerability.”
Niger continues to face an acute and complex humanitarian crisis marked by the impact of persistent insecurity, epidemics, food insecurity and floods.
There was a 14 per cent jump in the number of people who need humanitarian aid due to population movements in the Diffa, Maradi, Tahoua and Tillabéri regions.
