“J’exhorte la communauté internationale d'agir rapidement et de manière décisive pour empêcher qu’Haïti ne sombre davantage dans le chaos. L'évasion massive de prison le weekend dernier a été décrite par les autorités haïtiennes comme une menace mortelle pour la sécurité nationale. Depuis le début de l’année, mille cent quatre-vingt-treize (1193) personnes ont été tuées, et six-cent quatre-vingt-douze blessées, du fait de la violence des gangs – des chiffres choquants! Cette situation est plus qu’insoutenable pour le peuple haïtien. Dans la perspective de la réunion du Conseil de sécurité d'aujourd'hui, j'appelle encore une fois au déploiement urgent, sans plus attendre, de la Mission multinationale d'appui à la sécurité en Haïti, afin de soutenir la Police nationale et d'apporter la sécurité au peuple haïtien, dans des conditions conformes aux normes et standards internationaux en matière de droits humains. La réalité est que, dans le contexte actuel, il n'y a pas d'alternative pour protéger la vie des gens. Le temps nous est compté.”

The High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk today (06 Mar) urged the international community to “act swiftly and decisively to prevent Haiti's further descent into chaos.”

In a video statement, the High Commissioner said, “Last weekend’s mass prison breakout has been described by Haitian officials as a lethal threat to national security. Since the beginning of the year, a staggering 1,193 people were killed, and 692 others were injured by gang violence.

“This situation is beyond untenable for the people of Haiti,” he reiterated.

Ahead of today’s Security Council meeting, the human right’s chief called once again for “the urgent deployment, with no further delay, of the Multinational Security Support Mission in Haiti (MSS), to support the National Police and bring security to the Haitian people, under conditions that comply with international human rights norms and standards.”

“The reality is that, in the current context, there is no realistic alternative available to protect lives. We are simply running out of time,” Türk concluded.
