“At the beginning of February, we said, ‘January's is the most violent month since two years back,’ and sadly enough we could very shortly say that, confirmed that February was even more violent. And that means that since those two months, we've had 2,500 people killed, kidnapped, or injured.”

“We now have a situation of actually 5.5 million of the 1.4 population is in need of some type of humanitarian assistance and that is, as you can imagine, this is a significant number. And out of those 5.5, 3 million are children.”

“Since early in the year, we've had 48,000 newly displaced people. And as I said, many of these are families. They've had to flee multiple times. And as I say, the level of trauma, fatigue, and also suffering among these families is really, it's extremely alarming and it's very, very painful.”

“And we have now 4 percent of the Haiti’s population that is acutely food insecure. And just in parentheses, 45 percent of patients also have no access to drinking water. So that's another alarming figure. But also, the WFP and they really, they have described this as a protracted episode of mass hunger, and with 1.4 million Haitians being one step away from famine.”

Ulrika Richardson, Humanitarian Coordinator for Haiti, said that the situation in the country, and in Port-au-Prince in particular, has gone “from very worrying to extremely alarming.”
Addressing the press today (21 Mar) Richardson said that the Haitian Police, has been “extremely heroic” and been able to put up some resistance, “but of course they struggled to be present everywhere, particularly as the gangs, as they've done over the past few days, they advanced into new areas of the capital.”
