3. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Paula Narvaez, President, Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC):
“Despite the rapid pace of technological advancement, these transformations will not automatically align with equitable and sustainable development. And they may not adequately address the urgency and complexity of our global challenges. We must clearly identify ways to fully harness the potential of science, technology, and innovation for sustainable development. And find ways to deploy these tools equitably, on a large scale and with unprecedented speed to confront our shared challenges head-on.”

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Dennis Francis, President of the General Assembly, United Nations:
“It is imperative that we work much harder – and engendering the desired political will – to mobilize science, for accelerated action and innovative sustainable solutions. The intensity of climate change, in particular, is particularly outpacing our capacities to cope – demanding urgent and coordinated action by governments, private sector, the scientific community and academia.”

Storyline

Paula Narvaez, President of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) said, “Despite the rapid pace of technological advancement, these transformations will not automatically align with equitable and sustainable development.”

Addressing the 9th Multistakeholder Forum on Science, Technology and Innovation for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) today (9 May) in New York, Narvaez said that technological advancement and transformations "may not adequately address the urgency and complexity of our global challenges.”

In the face of accelerating climate change, the burgeoning capabilities of artificial intelligence (AI), and the urgent pursuit of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the convergence of these domains presents both formidable challenges and unprecedented opportunities.

As governments, the private sector, and the academic science and engineering communities come together at the Multi-stakeholder Forum on Science, Technology, and Innovation for the SDGs, the focus is on harnessing the transformative power of science, science advice, and a wide range of technology solutions, most notably AI, to address the pressing challenges of climate change and achieve the SDGs by 2030.

The ECOSOC president said, “We must clearly identify ways to fully harness the potential of science, technology, and innovation for sustainable development. And find ways to deploy these tools equitably, on a large scale and with unprecedented speed to confront our shared challenges head-on.”

Also addressing the forum, Dennis Francis, President of the General Assembly, said, “It is imperative that we work much harder – and engendering the desired political will – to mobilize science, for accelerated action and innovative sustainable solutions. The intensity of climate change, in particular, is particularly outpacing our capacities to cope – demanding urgent and coordinated action by governments, private sector, the scientific community, and academia.”
