Our role has been to provide technical and other assistance for electoral preparations and to support the establishment of the necessary preconditions,, as agreed by the parties themselves, so that elections are free, fair, credible, and most importantly peaceful and do not become a driver of conflict.”

Storyline

On 29th of May, the United Nations Mission in South Sudan commemorated the 76th International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers with a special ceremony in Juba.

At the event, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of UNMISS, Nicholas Haysom, recognized the important contribution of the almost 18,000 civilian and uniformed men and women who serve the cause of peace under the UN flag in the conflict-affected country. He also paid tribute to the 14 personnel who have lost their lives in the past year.

The mission carries out a wide range of activities to protect civilians and build peace and progress within the world’s newest nation, including peacekeeping patrols, establishing temporary bases in conflict hotspots, supporting political and peace dialogue at the national and local levels, and providing technical assistance to preparations for elections which are scheduled to take place in December 2024.

Almost 18,000 united nations peacekeepers work in partnership with the government and people of South Sudan to help the world’s newest nation navigate the difficult path from conflict to peace. Today, their contribution was recognized in a special ceremony on the international day of united nations peacekeepers.

During the ceremony, tribute was paid to 14 national and international peacekeepers who lost their lives serving under the un flag in South Sudan in the last year.

The mission carries out many activities to build peace and progress in South Sudan. It protects civilians through robust peacekeeping patrols, establishing temporary bases in conflict hotspots, and intensive efforts to bring communities together to deter violence, reconcile and live together peacefully.
It is also building vital infrastructure, including repairing 2000 kilometres of roads, maintaining 80 kilometres of dykes and berms protecting 300,000 flood stricken people in Bentiu, and constructing new schools, health care centres, water points, police stations, courts and other facilities.
Speaking at the event, the government of South Sudan acknowledged the tangible impact of this work on communities across the country.

The theme of this year’s event in South Sudan is “building better together”. It promotes the importance of peacekeeping as a collective endeavour which can only succeed with the support of many partners. As a partner in peace, UNMISS is supporting the government to fully implement the peace agreement and prepare for elections.

As the ceremony wrapped up, the head of UNMISS thanked the people of South Sudan for their support, resilience and determination to overcome the many obstacles they face.
He also paid tribute to the peacekeepers who serve with dedication and courage in the pursuit of peace and to secure the better future that the people of South Sudan deserve.
