Storyline

The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) continues to support the efforts of local authorities to contain the situation in Tambura in Western Equatoria, where the renewal of violent conflict has resulted in tens of thousands of people being displaced.

Most women, children, and elderly persons have fled their homes to seek shelter next to a temporary UNMISS base in Tambura. Peacekeepers are on the ground to reduce tensions and do anything else they can to ease their suffering.

An UNMISS Assessment Mission was welcomed to the area today (6 Jun) by the local community.

Ebebia Markabuzu, a mother of seven, called for sustainable peace.

Alfred Futuyo Karaba, Governor of Western Equatoria State, echoed her sentiments and called for effective partnerships.

For her part, Jane Lanyero Kony, Head of the UNMISS Field Office in Yambio, expressed the Mission’s commitment to the people of Tambura.

With the rapid deployment of South Sudan People’s Defence Forces, relative peace has returned to Tambura. More than 700 guns were confiscated when local communities were searched.
