Storyline

The first-ever International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the 1995 Genocide in Srebrenica was observed today (11 Jul) with a high-level commemorative event held in New York.

In May 2024, The UN General Assembly in a resolution designated 11 July as the International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the 1995 Genocide in Srebrenica.

The Assembly also asked the Secretary-General to establish an outreach programme on the Srebrenica genocide in preparation for the 30th anniversary.

It further condemned any denial of the Srebrenica genocide as a historical event and called on Member States to preserve the established facts, including through their educational systems, towards preventing denial and distortion, and any occurrence of genocide in the future.

At the event, President of the General Assembly Dennis Francis said, “Both the International Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia and the International Court of Justice have recognized this massacre as an act of genocide. The lessons of Srebrenica are clear: intolerance and bigotry – when allowed to flourish – culminate in atrocities beyond comprehension.”

He also said, “While it is essential to prosecute the remaining perpetrators of the Srebrenica genocide, we cannot accept any attempt to simply forget or deny the enormity of what transpired.”

He continued, “Genocide denial will neither lead to justice nor peace, and every nation – regardless of its distance to Bosnia-Herzegovina, or its own history – has a responsibility to uphold international court decisions that bring justice to survivors and prevent genocide within its own borders.”

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina Elmedin Konakovic said, “Let us be clear: This resolution does not assign blame to any group or nation. It acknowledges the undeniable truth of the genocide and seeks the honor, the memory of its victims while promoting reconciliation and understanding.”

He stressed, “Denying the genocide insults the memory of the victims and obstruct peace. We must reject the politics of division and embrace the principles of truth. Srebrenica remind us to remain vigilant, against hatred and intolerance. ‘Never again’ means taking actions to prevent future atrocities.”

Reading a statement on behalf of the UN Secretary-General, Alice Wairimu Nderitu, Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide, said, “The genocide in Srebrenica stands as a harrowing testament to the devastating consequences of inaction in the face of hatred. We must fight against division and intolerance, stand up for human rights, and promote mutual understanding and reconciliation.”

The event was organized by the Permanent Mission of Bosnia and Herzegovina to the United Nations.
