The Security Council adopted unanimously today (12 Jul) the draft resolution renewing the mandate of United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH) for another year, until 15 July 2025.
Addressing the council after the cote, Antonio Rodrigue, Haitian Permanent Representative said, “The Haitian government, through my office, welcomes the unanimous adoption of resolution 2743 which extends the mandate of BINUH for another year. This represents the renewal of the international community's commitment to work towards peace, security, and political stability in Haiti.”
He also said, “The extension of BINUH's mandate certainly represents a step in the right direction. However, there is still a lot to do. The mandate’s extension alone cannot suffice to help the government address the security and humanitarian challenges facing Haiti. We need to converge synergies and find innovative ideas that respond to the complexity of the situation.”
He continued, “The arrival of the first contingents of Kenyan police officers from MSS to support the efforts of the Haitian National Police in their fight against heavily armed gangs has raised high hopes among the Haitian population of seeing an end to their suffering and the violence they endure.”
After the Council, Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield, Representative of the United States of America to the United Nations, addressed the press and announced that the will “provide over 300 million dollars to the MSS in Haiti which would work alongside the Haitian National Police to improve security conditions.”
