UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk began his official visit to Guatemala on Tuesday (16 Jul).

In the morning, Türk met with President Bernardo Arévalo in the National Palace of Culture in Guatemala city. At the end of their meeting, President Bernardo Arévalo and HC Voker Türk surprised a group of school children visiting the ‘Patio de la Paz’ in the Palace. The monument, depicting two hands, stands where Guatemala's Peace Accords were signed in 1996.

The High Commissioner reiterated his support for the authorities’ initiatives and actions to strengthen the rule of law and advance human rights.

“I've just met with the President of Guatemala, President Arévalo, very pleased to have a very in-depth discussion with him about the challenges of the country and the very strong commitment from the government to promote and protect human rights and to revitalise the social contract between the institutions of the state and the population. I'm very hopeful and very happy to be here, and I'm looking forward to meeting a lot of people from all across Guatemala,and to advance the human rights agenda in this country,“ the High Commissioner said.

Human rights challenges in Guatemala, especially with respect to discrimination and inequalities, hampers the enjoyment of human rights by Indigenous peoples and people of African descent, women, young people and persons with disabilitiesImplementation of the 1996 Peace agreements remains pending in a number of areas, including in relation to human rights and Indigenous peoples’ rights.

At the UN office in the the capital, the Human Rights chief held meetings with a variety of Indigenous leaders and organizations, and discussed the structural discrimination and inequalities affecting indigenous peoples and people of African descent.

He also met with 50 representatives of civil society groups. The High Commisssioner called for the adoption of a comprehensive public policy on protection of human rights defenders, including journalists and justice officials, as well as policies to strengthen civic space.

In his four-day visit, Türk will also meet members of the judiciary and Congress, and the Ombudsperson. He will have meetings with the private sector. A press conference will be held on Friday 19 July in Guatemala City. Access will be limited to accredited media and details will be communicated locally.
