3. Various shots, audience, workshops, Youth Assembly
4. SOUNDBITE (Albanian) Drita Dibrani, Kosovo Albanian Youth Assembly participant:

6. Various shots, breakout sessions, workshops, posters and brainstorming documents
7. SOUNDBITE (Macedonian) Matia Prenkočević, Macedonian Youth Assembly participant:
“I think there are many risks associated. AI can be used to generate propaganda and to spark conflict between nations that do not need it.”

“We can turn to AI for information, but it shouldn’t be our only source of information.”
10. Various shots, young people presenting projects for small grants competition
11. SOUNDBITE (English) Leonard Párraga, United Nations Kosovo Youth Assembly Participant and Colombian Peace Activist:
“I’ve noticed that there’s a big similarity when it comes to the conflict in Colombia and the conflict in the Balkans. There is a need for having a proper reconciliation. I think AI can help us to generate more empathy between different groups, for example, by providing us the stories from the other side.” 12. Various shots, Leonard Párraga on a panel 13. Various shots, young people at the Youth Assembly
14. SOUNDBITE (English) Joe Fennell, Youth Assembly Facilitator & AI Ethicist
“Think about ethical uses too. This can be a massively powerful tool to give you second opinions, to enrich your own cognitive diversity, to challenge your own biases if you ask it to. There are many very positive uses of generative AI.”
15. Med shot, Joe Fennell in the audience
16. Various Shots, scenes from Youth Assembly
17. SOUNDBITE (English) Arijel Kurtagić, Youth Assembly Co-organizer & Disability Advocate
“I’m really optimistic but I’m also really concerned, especially for the development of social relationships, for the transformation in education that is before us, and for the transitions in the workplace and massive layoffs that are happening right now. So, our life is being transformed at every possible aspect, as early as we start to educate ourselves about this technology, we can have some autonomy on how it impacts our lives”

20. SOUNDBITE (English) Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) and Head of UNMIK Caroline Ziadeh:

Storyline

Artificial Intelligence is reshaping much of the world around us, but so much is uncertain and still to be defined - what does this mean for young people? And what are the potential impacts on peace and security? The United Nations Kosovo Youth Assembly, now in its sixth year, brought together 150 young people from Kosovo and the region for a two-day event to look at precisely that: the opportunities, threats and potential of the AI world - and its power to bring together or push apart people in a post-conflict region.

While much is made of the power of AI to drive forward progress, there are a different set of implications for peace and security in the world, and whether AI can – and will be – used as a force for unity.

SOUNDBITE (Macedonian) Matia Prenkočević, Macedonian Youth Assembly participant:
“I think there are many risks associated. AI can be used to generate propaganda and to spark conflict between nations that do not need it. We can turn to AI for information, but it shouldn’t be our only source of information.”

The positive uses of AI were also discussed, with youth peace activists reflecting on one major factor that prevents conflict resolution – and AI’s potential to assist.

SOUNDBITE (English) Leonard Párraga, United Nations Kosovo Youth Assembly Participant and Colombian Peace Activist:
“I’ve noticed there’s a big similarity when it comes to the conflict in Colombia and the conflict in the Balkans. And the main point for me is there’s a need for having a proper reconciliation. I think AI can help us to generate more empathy between different groups, for example by providing us stories from the ‘other side.”

The ethics of Artificial Intelligence also came into sharp focus, with a University of Cambridge trained AI ethicist facilitating various workshops at the Youth Assembly and injecting critical questions around how we can safely use AI – with a message of using it honestly and transparently.

Disability advocate Arijel Kurtagić from Bosnia & Herzegovina has spent much time reflecting on the potential of AI in helping to integrate – or further segregate – people living on the margins. The scale of AI is so big that the social fabric for everyone may be altered without careful application, she says.

SOUNDBITE (English) Arijel Kurtagić, Youth Assembly Co-organizer & Disability Advocate:
“I’m really optimistic but I’m also really concerned, especially for the development of social relationships, for the transformation in education that is before us, and for the transitions in the workplace and massive layoffs that are happening right now. As early as we start to education ourselves about this technology, we can have some autonomy on how it impacts our lives.”

The Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) and Head of UNMIK Caroline Ziadeh gave the keynote remarks at the UNMIK-led event, urging young people to take responsible leadership in the roll out of this burgeoning transformation – and not to forget their humanity.

“It is our collective responsibility to ensure its ethical and inclusive deployment. And as we navigate through various complexities, we need to also remember that you may use AI to stay online, but don’t let it offline your creativity and spirt – stay always online.”
