Assistant Secretary-General for Peacebuilding Support Elizabeth Spehar said, “Now, more than ever, a more effective United Nations relies on stronger and deepened cooperation with regional and subregional organizations.”

Addressing the Security Council today (19 Jul) about cooperation between the UN and regional and subregional organisations in maintaining international peace and security, Spehar said, “As we meet today, the Eurasian region faces rising tensions and emerging threats that require urgent joint action.”

She continued, “These threats and challenges range from security, such as preventing violent extremism and countering terrorism, drug trafficking, and unresolved border issues, to those relating to the impact of climate change, including accelerated melting of glaciers and water scarcity, increasingly affecting the countries in the region, and requiring pragmatic collaboration.”

Zhang Ming, Secretary-General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (CSO), stressed, “We need, and we must promote international cooperation with the UN playing a central coordinating role to promptly respond to the threats and challenges and jointly maintain security stability development, prosperity at regional and international levels.”
