Scott Anderson, Director of UNRWA Affairs and Deputy Humanitarian Coordinator, visited on Saturday (27 Jul) the Basma Amal Camp for persons with disabilities in Deir al-Balah, Central Gaza.

He assessed their conditions and needs and engaged with children through play and singing in their tents.

Anderson toured the tents of the displaced, listening to the problems they face amidst the ongoing conflict.

Amjad Shawa, Director of the Palestinian NGO Network overseeing the camp, welcomed Anderson’s visit and commended UNRWA’s efforts in supporting the Palestinians.

He said, “There is complex and compounded suffering, but through this partnership established today between three institutions - the Palestinian Red Crescent, the Agricultural Relief, and Our Children Society (Atfaluna) - we were able to establish the first shelter for people with disabilities. The UN Deputy Humanitarian Coordinator for the Occupied Palestinian Territory said, “I mean, it’s truly remarkable that some of the most vulnerable people here in Gaza - those with disabilities - now have somewhere safe to be.
