Storyline

An initial delivery of 99,000 doses of the mpox vaccine donated by the European Commission's Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority arrived today (5 Sep) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The doses were delivered by a commercial flight landing at 12:10 pm on 5 September at the N'Djili International Airport.

A further 101,000 doses of the vaccine are expected to be delivered to the country in the coming days.
The Democratic Republic of the Congo is witnessing a serious mpox outbreak with more than 20,000 suspected cases and over 630 deaths reported in 2024. The vaccines delivered today are the first to arrive in the country.

WHO and partners are supporting the government to deliver a comprehensive health emergency response to the outbreak, based on case finding, contact tracing, targeted vaccination, case management, infection prevention and control, and community engagement and mobilization.
