Commemorating the 63rd anniversary of the death of former Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld, UN chief Antonio Guterres said, " Let us renew our resolve and commitment to pursue the full truth of what happened on that fateful night in 1961.”

At a wreath-laying ceremony today (10 Sep) in New York, Guterres said, “Dag Hammarskjöld is no longer with us. But the ideals that drove him are ours to pursue: Peace, justice, and shared humanity. Effective multilateralism and common cause.”

“Around the world, war is rife – ripping lives and communities apart and taking a terrible toll on United Nations staff,” the UN chief continued, adding that the UN has lost more colleagues in the past twelve months than during any other period on record in the organisation’s history.

Guterres highlighted that the Summit of the Future later this month is an opportunity: “To embrace the spirit of Dag Hammarskjöld’s work, and reform our multilateral institutions so they are fit to pursue peace in our changing world.”

He reiterated, “Let us follow his example, take this chance, and keep our gaze fixed on the promise of a world of peace and prosperity for all.”

The UN chief concluded by asking all the participants to join him in a moment of silence at the ceremony.

Dag Hjalmar Agne Carl Hammarskjöld was Secretary-General of the United Nations from 10 April 1953 until 18 September 1961, when he died in a plane crash while on a peace mission in the Congo.

He was born on 29 July 1905 in Jonkoping in south-central Sweden.

During his terms as Secretary-General, Hammarskjöld carried out many responsibilities for the United Nations in its efforts to prevent war and serve the other aims of the Charter.
