5. SOUNDBITE (English) Robert A. Wood, Alternate Representative for Special Political Affairs in the United Nations, United States:
“Renewing the sanctions measures will restrict the movement of arms into Darfur and sanction individuals and entities contributing to, or complicit in, destabilizing activities of Sudan. All of this is critical to helping end the escalating conflict, alleviate humanitarian catastrophe and put Sudan back on the path to stability and security. The United States remains committed to the Sudanese people and will continue to work closely with Sudan, colleagues on the council, l and all stakeholders to facilitate peace for the country and the region.”

10. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Al-Harith Idriss al-Harith Mohamed, Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Sudan:
“There's irrefutable evidence that this war that we are experiencing is a result of the support of the UAE for militias that are committing war crimes and crimes against humanity in Darfur. Sir, I would like to share with you a witness statement of two journalists what they witnessed, (…) regarding the secret war of the United Arab Emirates in Sudan. They put the following question, how can the international community, how does it intend to bring an end to the war where foreign interference from the UAE has led to crimes against humanity and war crimes being committed. This is not a secret to anyone; Abu Dhabi has provided weapons to the militias.”
11. Wide shot, Council
12. SOUNDBITE (English) Mohamed Abushahab, Permanent Representative to the United Nations, The UAE:
“I am compelled to participate in this meeting to respond to the baseless allegations made earlier this morning by the Sudanese representative who, as we all know, represents one of the warring parties whose legitimacy to represent the people of Sudan is questionable, to say the least. His claims are utterly false and are a cynical attempt to deflect attention from the failings of The Sudanese Armed Forces. Despite the immensely high stakes, the South has shown zero political courage. The warring parties have caused this catastrophe, and only they can end it.”

Storyline

The United Nations Security Council unanimously adopted a draft resolution today (11 Sep), extending the Sudan sanctions regime, including targeted sanctions such as asset freezes, travel bans, and an arms embargo, until 12 September 2025. The resolution is a technical rollover of measures previously renewed by resolution 2676 in March 2023.

Speaking after the vote, US representative Robert A. Wood emphasized the importance of renewing the sanctions. "Renewing the sanctions measures will restrict the movement of arms into Darfur and sanction individuals and entities contributing to, or complicit in, destabilizing activities of Sudan," he said.

Sudan's representative, Al-Harith Idriss al-Harith Mohamed said, "there is irrefutable evidence that this war we are experiencing is a result of the support of the UAE for militias that are committing war crimes and crimes against humanity in Darfur."

Referring to the Sudanese representative’s remarks, the UAE's representative, Mohamed Abushahab, said the accusations were "baseless," adding that, “his claims are utterly false and are a cynical attempt to deflect attention from the failings of the Sudanese Armed Forces.” Abushahab also said that the warring parties in Sudan bear sole responsibility for the ongoing catastrophe.
