Storyline

A UN official said, “South-South and triangular cooperation offer a pathway that unlocks the urgent surge and investment required to achieve the SDGs.”

Today (12 Sep), on the occasion of United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation, a high-level panel discussion was held at the UN.

The theme of the event was "A Better Tomorrow through South-South Cooperation."

Addressing the panel, Dima Al-Khatib, Director of the UN Office for South-South Cooperation said, “As we approach the Summit of the Future in few weeks, we have an opportunity to reaffirm our commitment with concrete actions to these principles, embracing solidarity and mutual support to build a better, more equitable and sustainable future.”

Also addressing the panel, Philemon Yang of Cameroon, President of the 79th Session of the UN General Assembly said, “Countries of the global South, working together, have the capacity and the resource to take their destiny into the hands, uplift themselves socio-economically, and can collaborate to address shared challenges. These nations draw upon their common histories, unique experiences and socio-economic contexts to develop solutions that are not only effective but sustainable.”

Achim Steiner, Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) said, “There are so many strengths reflected in the idea of South-South and triangular cooperation, and indeed, a few days from now, the UN will be convening a Summit of the Future. To some that may be optimism in the midst of disaster, but in fact, it is precisely in moments like these that here in the United Nations, the world can come together and actually give people the sense that there is a way forward.”

Rabab Fatima, UN High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States said, “Amid global upheaval and rising inequality, strengthening international cooperation is crucial for creating a better world and a better tomorrow for current and future generations.”

However, she added, “South-South cooperation should complement and not substitute traditional North-South cooperation.”

To highlight the importance of South-South cooperation, the General Assembly in its resolution 58/220 decided to observe the United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation on 12 September every year.

The date commemorates the adoption in 1978 of the Buenos Aires Plan of Action for Promoting and Implementing Technical Cooperation among Developing Countries (BAPA).
