The situation in the Middle East - Security Council, 9723rd meeting

Houthis’ Recent Targeting of Greek-Flagged Oil Tanker Threatens ‘Unprecedented’ Environmental Disaster, Security Council Hears During Meeting on Yemen.
Description

As the Security Council met to consider the situation in Yemen, Hans Grundberg, Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for Yemen, expressed concern over the recent targeting of the Greek-flagged oil tanker Sounion by the Houthis, who are officially known as Ansar Allah.

That attack, he said, forced the abandonment of the ship and raises the imminent threat of a catastrophic oil spill and environmental disaster of “unprecedented” scale.

“I will take this opportunity to strongly urge Ansar Allah to end their dangerous targeting of civilian vessels in the Red Sea and beyond,” he said.

The Council was also briefed by Joyce Msuya, Acting Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Acting Emergency Relief Coordinator, and Linda Al Obahi, Senior Political Affairs and Mediation Advisor of the Peace Track Initiative.
