8.    SOUNDBITE (English) Sam Rose, Deputy Director of UNRWA Affairs in the Gaza Strip:
“‏The health situation in the Gaza Strip right now is absolutely catastrophic. We have large outbreaks of infectious diseases, diarrhea, respiratory infections, skin diseases. We are struggling at hospitals and at health clinics to bring the supplies in that we need to treat the sick, to treat the injured. Over half of Gaza's hospitals are closed now. Those that are opening are functioning only partially, and they're regularly evacuated due to the incessant and relentless nature of the conflicts and the regular evacuation orders. And all this is added to and compounded by the conditions in which people are living. People are living out in the open, not enough water, no proper sanitation, immune systems and mental health degraded by months upon months of relentless bombardment, when people go to sleep not knowing if they're going to wake up the following day. All of this creates absolutely catastrophic conditions for people's health, particularly women, particularly children. And that's precisely why we are here today administering a polio campaign as a direct result of the re-emergence of polio in Gaza, 25 years after it was wiped out. Cases were identified in July and August. The first cases of polio confirmed. So we are working with the Ministry of Health, with UN partners on a large-scale polio campaign, aiming to vaccinate about 600,000 children over the next ten days in central Gaza, in southern Gaza and in the north.”

10.   SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Ruba Abu Khair, a displaced person from Jabalia town, northern Gaza Strip:
"I am currently displaced at the Deir al-Balah School. Since October 7, the rest of my family has been in Jabalia, and we hope God keeps them safe. Today, I came to the Deir al-Balah clinic to get the second dose of the polio vaccine for the children, and we thank those in charge of this campaign because it truly alleviates the suffering of the Palestinian mother, who suffers indescribably. This is a small part, and the most important thing is that the vaccine was available in more than one place, and it was easily accessible. There was also a nice gesture of painting the faces of the children receiving the vaccine, bringing smiles to the Palestinian children who have been deprived of education, healthcare, and their right to security and peaceful living. This is the least that can be done by those advocating for polio vaccination.”

Storyline

The second phase of the polio vaccination campaign launched in the Gaza Strip on Monday (14 Oct), starting from the central areas of the Strip, with the efforts of various United Nations organizations operating in the region.

The campaign aims to reach approximately 590,000 children under the age of ten across the Gaza Strip within less than two weeks as part of the second round of the vaccination initiative.

UN organizations conducted the first round of vaccinations last month, following the partial paralysis of a child caused by the type 2 poliovirus in August, marking the first such case in the region in 25 years.
