“Today we are celebrating the 16 days of activism and a strong message for all of us. It's a strong message for women and girls to be strong and to fight for their rights. It's a strong message to authorities to take care of us. It's a strong message to international communities to have more funding, technical support, and to have all of us come round one table to ensure that women and girls will be safe and will be treated in a dignified way. Women and girls will have access to services as well as access to rights.”

“Gender-based violence is not a new. But with the war, since the war erupted in April last year, [it] launched Sudan into one of the biggest production and GBV crises. There is and increased in gender-based violence cases, especially in conflict zones.”

“The slogan this year is “You are not alone” and I will really insist on that. Women and girls, boys and men who are gender-based Violence Survivor in Sudan, you are not alone. We are all together. We are all here to serve you, to help you and to support you.”

At a gathering site in Port Sudan hosting displaced people from Khartoum, UNFPA and partners have held an event to launch this year 16-Days of activism.
According to Shaza Ahmed, the Executive Director of Nada El Azhar, a Sudanese women-led organization providing assistance to survivors of gender-based violence, “Gender-based violence is nothing new, but as the war erupted, [it has] launched Sudan into one of the biggest protection and gender-based violence crisis”.
Tom Fletcher, Under-Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, who attended the event, said: “We must do better. We must make sure that these words, ‘you are not alone’, are not just words that people say to a microphone when they visit you, but they become the core of our work.”
