Asked about United States President Donald Trump’s plan for Gaza, the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General, Stéphane Dujarric, today (5 Feb) said, “any forced displacement of people is tantamount to ethnic cleansing.”
Dujarric noted that Secretary-General António Guterres had spoken with king Abdullah of Jordan over the phone on the issue.
Previewing the speech Guterres will read later today in front of the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People, Dujarric said, “in our search for solutions, we shouldn’t make the problem worse. And whatever solutions we find, need to be rooted in the bedrock of international law.”
Responding to another question on the issue, the spokesperson said the Secretary-General “has been very clear across the world in the many conflicts that we're seeing, in clearly calling out violations of international law and reminding member states of their duties to uphold it. He will continue to do that.”
