Storyline

Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Tom Fletcher accompanied a UN aid convoy into the Gaza Strip today (6 Feb), where OCHA and partners continue responding to immense needs as part of a prepared scale-up of our operations.

Since the ceasefire, displaced families have been returning to their neighbourhoods and towns, many times to find piles of rubble where their homes once stood.

SOUNDBITE(Arabic) Abdul Rahim Salman Salman, Displaced Person, Gaza:
“After I got up this morning, I came to the house. I found out it had been bombed. Frankly, I've been sad and cried out. I remembered my father and mother. Their memories are in the house. The memories are gone. My brother was also killed. My nephews and brother were injured.”

In northern Gaza, Fletcher spoke with survivors and returnees in Jabalya who are trying to rebuild their lives amid the rubble.

SOUNDBITE (English) Tom Fletcher, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator:
“So, we're here in northern Gaza, and we've driven through the desolation of rubble, pulverized homes, pulverized communities, pulverized lives. Over 50,000 dead, over 100,000 injured. He also toured two hospitals – Al Shifa in Gaza city and Al Awda in Jabalya – where he met with patients, staff and management.
