The Security Council unanimously adopted today (21 Feb) a resolution on the situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), calling for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire.

France, the penholder on the DRC, authored the draft resolution.

Addressing the Security Council after the vote, Nicolas de Rivière, French Permanent Representative to the United Nations, said, “There is not military solution to the conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. The M23 offensive, supported by Rwanda, must stop. The priority is to reach an effective, unconditional, and immediate ceasefire agreement.”

Zénon Mukongo Ngay, Congolese Permanent Representative to the United Nations, said, “It certainly took the Council a long time to reach a consensus, but it has shown resilience.
