Storyline

“Girls are not statistics,” said UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Millie Bobby Brown. “Yet, the world continues to deny them the opportunities they deserve.”

Addressing the event ‘POWER4Girls: invest in girls, transform the world’ today (10 Mar), Kitty van der Heijden, Assistant Secretary-General and Deputy Executive Director of Partnerships, at the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) said, “Yes, we've achieved a lot, but we are falling short of the promise to deliver a life in dignity for every girl, everywhere, all the time.”

She stressed, “The future belongs to adolescent girls. It is theirs to take. These girls are not going anywhere except upwards and onwards. With a little bit of your help.”

Also addressing today’s event, Millie Bobby Brown, actrice and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, said, “In the last 30 years, we have seen great progress thanks to the tireless work of organizations like UNICEF. More girls are in school. Fewer are being forced into child marriage. Maternal mortality has nearly halved. But let's be clear: progress is not the same as equality. Change is happening, but not fast enough. And not for everyone.”

She stated, “Girls are not statistics. They are human beings with dreams, ambitions and immense potential. And yet the world continues to deny them the opportunities they deserve.”

She continued, “But we are impatient for change. We see the injustices every day. We see girls facing sexual violence, child marriage, period poverty and the lack of maternal health care. But we also see something else. Something even more powerful. We see the strength of girls standing up and leading.”

She concluded, “The time for change is now. The time for action is now. And together we will make sure that every girl, everywhere, has the power to write her own future.”

The event ‘POWER4Girls: invest in girls, transform the world’ presented a timely opportunity to focus on the progress and struggle for girls since the Beijing declaration – on where we have made strides and where we face the biggest gaps and needs for investment.

It saw also the launch of POWER4Girls, a first-of-its-kind global initiative working with and for girls to drive system-level changes for adolescent girls everywhere.

Achieving gender equality and meeting the needs of adolescent girls requires a multi-faceted approach, driven by strong partnerships with national governments and the leadership of girls.

POWER4Girls is this opportunity, aiming to accelerate at-scale action to advance girls’ rights, wellbeing, and leadership, whilst influencing policy and programming work across the development-humanitarian ecosystem.
