The Security Council today (14 Mar) issued statement “strongly” condemning “the widespread violence perpetrated in the provinces of Latakia and Tartus, Syria, since 6th March, which had included mass killings of civilians, particularly among the Alawite community.”
The statement, read by Danish Ambassador Christina Markus Lassen, further condemned “attacks targeting civilian infrastructure, including hospitals” and expressed “grave concern over the impact of this violence on escalating tensions among communities in Syria and calls on all parties to immediately cease all violence and inflammatory activities, and to ensure that all civilians, civilian infrastructure and humanitarian operations are protected.”
The Security Council, Lassen continued, reiterated “the obligation to respect human rights and international humanitarian law in all circumstances and urges all parties and states to ensure full, safe and unhindered humanitarian access to those affected and to ensure the humane treatment of all persons, including any person who has surrendered or otherwise laid down their arms.”
The Council statement recalled resolution 2254 of 2015 and its press statement of 17th December 2024 reaffirming “its strong commitment to the sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of Syria,” and called on all states “to respect this principle and to refrain from any action or interference that may further destabilize Syria.”
Syria has faced 14 years of conflict, with millions displaced. Hundreds of thousands were killed, disappeared, or tortured.
Syria remains one of the largest humanitarian crises in the world. Recent events have only added to these needs. The UN and partners are mobilizing to assess the people’s needs and adapt the response to the new, and still rapidly shifting conditions.
