Storyline

In a new partnership hailed as “historic” during this year’s Africa Forum on Displacement in Nairobi, Mastercard Foundation announced a landmark $300 million partnership with UNHCR to support more than half a million refugees and displaced youth across Africa to complete their education and enable 200,000 young people to transition into dignified work by 2030.

With 45 million refugees and displaced persons across Africa, countries like Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo account for some of the largest displacement crisis globally.

This partnership aims to support these most affected regions, which were already grappling with their own economic challenges.

In Chad, for example, more than 770,000 Sudanese refugees sought safety in the last two years alone.

Many of them are trained medics who, despite going through so much suffering, continue to use their skills to help their community in the refugee settlements, where there is a shortage of health care workers.

To help them utilise their full potential, UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, with support from Mastercard Foundation, is working with the Chadian authorities to authenticate their medical certificates.

Some of those beneficiaries include Yacoub Idriss and Fatima Abdolgadir, who arrived in Chad in 2023. They both worked in El-Geneina teaching hospital in western Darfur before violence forced them to flee with their families.

The Sudan crisis has forcibly displaced nearly 13 million people, both within the country and across borders. One in every 13 refugees globally originates from Sudan, making it the largest number of people displaced outside their country in Africa.

Validating refugee doctors’ documents is part of a broader regional approach that aims to provide tailored assistance to address the specific needs of Sudanese refugees and provide them with opportunities where they are on their displacement journey.
