WHO / GAZA LIVING CONDITIONS

The worsening sanitation crisis in Gaza poses a grave and rapidly escalating public health emergency that requires urgent intervention. Findings from the January Joint WASH Assessment reveal that over half the population lack access to adequate sanitation, relying on limited, unsafe, or no facilities at all. More than 75 per cent are exposed to serious health risks, including sewage and rampant rodent and pest infestations. WHO

Shotlist

1. Various shots, makeshift tents in the displaced camp
2. Various shots, insect bites on children’s legs, neck and feet
3. Med shot, Hani Ahmed Khalifa, with his daughter sitting on his lap, showing the bites on her legs
4. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Hani Ahmed Khalifa, displaced person:
“Yes, in fact with the intense hot weather, bugs are everywhere; mosquitos, flies, and their effect is spotted on the skin. My daughter has spots all over her skin, and she’s heavily itching, also topical antipruritic (creams) are not available in pharmacies nor medical centres, and this is a huge issue during this heatwave. For instance, take a look at my daughter’s leg, itching with mosquito bites everywhere. Also, mice are everywhere in our tents, some rats but mostly mice; our tents are setup directly on the soil, therefore it’s easy for mice and rats to dig the ground and be in our tents; basically, no concrete floor, we are suffering from that.”
5. Various shots, the living conditions in the camp; standing wastewater, a makeshift cooking area and an internal shot of a tent made from various materials
6. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Hajja Maryam Al-Sarihi, displaced person:
“We are suffering, we are living the misery of a life, I mean we live in a place, a very hot place, a place exposed to all sorts of insects, a place where animals wouldn’t bear living in, but we are patient against all that. We have all types of insects, we have mosquitos, lizards, what can I say and how can I describe it? Also, we have malnutrition, children have anaemia.”

7. Wide shot, piles of waste and debris scattered on waste ground next to the camp
8. Med shot, an old mattress atop a metal drum
9. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Jawaher Abu Faraj, displaced person:
“Our tents, as you know, have mice, mosquitoes, flies, everyone is suffering the elderly and children, and yes mosquitoes do bite. Yes, I do go to the clinics and medical centers, there is no available treatment for mosquito bites.”
10. Wide shot, piles of waste and debris scattered on waste ground next to the camp
