17 JUNE 2025, NASSER MEDICAL COMPLEX, KHAN YOUNIS, GAZA

1. Various shots, wounded people being bought in to the Emergency Department by cars, trailers, donkey carts and carried by others
2. Wide shot, a very busy street next to the hospital
3. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Dr Mohammad Yazory, Emergency Department:
“No less than 60 dead and no less than 240 wounded were brought to Nasser Medical Complex. Of course, the nature of the injuries that arrived at the complex ranged from moderate to serious. The wounded gathered in the corridors of the hospital due to the lack of adequate bed capacity for patients. I came to work today and found that yesterday's patients who were supposed to have been discharged from the emergency department were still here because the hospital beds were full and the field hospitals were full with injuries from previous days.”

18 JUNE 2025, NASSER MEDICAL COMPLEX, KHAN YOUNIS, GAZA

4. Various shots, inside the Emergency Department showing busy corridors and injured patients on beds and stretchers
5. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Sameer, displaced person:
“We are extremely suffering from poverty, hunger, we are helpless. We have no vegetables, food, nor rice either, even the few available goods are set at very high prices, and we definitely can’t afford it. Our children, and youth are forced to go get the food supplies, even though they realize it’s dangerous, and it’s difficult, but they have no other solution, they must go to get food. They are basically going against their will; they need to feed their people, their families, their loved ones.”
6. Medium shot, inside the Emergency Department of a patient being moved by stretcher
7. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Sameer, displaced person
“Why? Why don’t they distribute food and drink in a safe way? Why? Let us go to them. Why are our children dying? Why are we dying over a bag of flour? Why? We are dying over a piece of bread.”
8. Various shots, a patient with a head injury being treated
9. Medium shot, used medical supplies on a bloody floor
10. Wide shot, external shot of people praying in front of a dead body under a white shroud
11. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Atef El-Hout, Director, Nasser Medical Complex:
“Nasser Medical Complex is suffering as the entire health sector is suffering, from severe shortage of medical supplies, medications, treatment for patients. This is when it comes to the medical side. There’s another challenge; the fuel challenge, as what we receive through the World Health Organization is only sufficient enough for a few days, then we suffer from diesel shortage. This is purely a drip-feeds policy that’s basically preventing us from operating properly within the complex, which is forcing us to ration supplies. This rationing process means shutting down some operating rooms, some oxygen stations, and other vital supplies we absolutely need at Nasser Medical Complex.”
12. Various shots, WHO team and partners arriving at the hospital, greeting hospital staff and being shown around various parts of the hospital including the ICU
13. Various shots, WHO team and partners walking towards the field hospital, with patients filling all the available beds in the field hospital
14. SOUNDBITE (English) Athanasios Gargavanis, Trauma surgeon & acting Gaza Team Lead, WHO:
“We are at Nasser Medical Complex. We are in the extension of beds that WHO and partners supported so that the hospital can extend its inpatient capacity. Yesterday, this hospital received more than 300 casualties and out of them, 75 dead. These people were queueing up just trying to get some food.”
15. Medium shot, field hospital tent with WHO logo on the left of the entrance
16. SOUNDBITE (English) Athanasios Gargavanis, Trauma surgeon & acting Gaza Team Lead, WHO:
“Hospitals should never be militarised. Health should be protected, and aid should be coming into Gaza in bulk.”
17. Wide shot, Athanasios Gargavanis shaking hands with the hospital Director Atef

Storyline

Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis, Gaza, is struggling to stay operational amid relentless strain and lack of supplies - WHO and partners assessed during a mission on 18 June.

Yesterday (17 Jun), the hospital received over 300 injured people, reportedly linked to two incidents near non-UN militarized food distribution sites where 75 people died, including 11 children. 590 patients are currently hospitalized - almost double Nasser’s capacity, and 51 patients are intubated.

A WHO-supported tent, meant for pediatric and surgical care, now serves as an overcrowded trauma ward with 100 beds, despite being built for 88. The hospital is unable to increase its capacity due to lack of ventilators, monitors, beds and staff.

Nasser is located within the evacuation zone. Many health workers cannot reach the hospital due to fear for safety or lack of fuel for transportation. Today, WHO delivered a minimum amount of fuel, enough to sustain just five more days of operation. Without additional fuel, services will begin shutting down.

WHO once again called for the protection of the hospital and for unimpeded entry of health aid and fuel into and across Gaza via all possible routes, “Time is ticking to save lives. Ceasefire!”
